Levy & Natatorium FAQs
Because it is used to pay salary and benefits in addition to pool expenses, according to ORC, it cannot be labeled as a natatorium levy. The ballot will say “current expenses”.
A renewal of a tax for the benefit of the Ayersville Local School District for the purpose of current expenses, that the county auditor estimates will collect $135,721 annually, at a rate not exceeding 1.30 mills for each $1 of taxable value, which amounts to $46 for each $100,000 of the county auditor's market value, for five years, commencing in 2027, first due in calendar year 2028.
This is a renewal of an existing levy, not a new tax. You are already paying this levy. The levy was originally approved at 1.3 mills, but Ohio tax rules can lower the amount you actually pay. The examples below use the full 1.3-mill rate, so your actual cost may be less.
To see exactly what you are paying now, visit https://auditor.defiance-county.com/ Search for your property tax for “2022 CURRENT EXPENSE” under Ayersville LSD. This is found toward the bottom of the webpage at the end of the tax section.
For a $100,000 home:
$100,000 home value × 35% = $35,000 taxable value
At 1.3 mills = $45.50 per year or $3.79 per month
The average home value in our district is $183,300, which would cost the average tax payer $83.40 annually or $6.95 per month. Your actual cost may be lower.
Farmland enrolled in CAUV is taxed using its CAUV value. CAUV generally gives farmland a lower taxable value because it is based on the land’s agricultural use.
$100,000 CAUV × 35% = $35,000 taxable value
At 1.3 mills = $45.50 per year or $3.79 per month
Remember: These examples use the full 1.3-mill rate. Because this is an existing levy, the best way to know what the renewal will cost you is to look at what you are already paying for the levy on your current tax bill.
In May 1972, voters passed a $710,000 bond issue for the purpose of constructing a school natatorium, remodeling and equipping the high school building, providing an accessory service building, furnishing and equipping for school purposes and lighting, equipping and otherwise improving school grounds. The tax was 1.4 mills (14 cents for every $100 valuation) for a maximum of 23 years.
Local residents endorsed construction of the pool because of the number of ponds in the area – the pool allowed all students to become familiar with water safety skills and become more comfortable in and around the water.
After construction delays, Ayersville’s natatorium opened to the public in November 1974. Initial admission for open swims was 25 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.
Ayersville owns the natatorium free and clear. The pool requires approximately $120,000 a year in taxes to operate and this levy provides the funds needed to continue to operate what has already been invested and paid for over the past 50+ years.
Our community has made a major investment in our Natatorium facility and this levy is needed to protect that investment for all of Pilot Nation that uses it each year and for years to come. Without the levy, the cost of operating the pool would have to come from other areas, which would take funding away from other services and support Ayersville provides to our students.
The levy generates approximately $135,000 annually. The pool also receives approximately $2,500 from rentals, $4,300 from open swim, and $2,000 from swim lessons.
The average cost of operations is about $120,000 or $10,000 per month. Money collected from this levy goes toward water/sewer, chemicals, electricity, lifeguards, cleaning, and upkeep.
The natatorium gives Ayersville the unique opportunity to offer services to our students and community that are not available at other surrounding schools.
The pool is used for gym class during the school day and for therapy for students. During the past year, the pool was utilized 2,830 times by K-6.
There are 7 Ayersville students employed through the pool. The students have the ability to earn their lifeguard certification while working for the pool and get credit in the school employee retirement system.
Over the summer, 6 staff members became lifeguard certified including: two cross country coaches, football coach/gym teacher, wrestling coach, and an educational aid who helps with the pool time during gym class. The gym teachers are lifeguard certified as well.
Athletics:
Student athletes of all ages use the facility for conditioning and training. The pool has been used by our HS football team, cross country team, 5th & 6th grade football, the youth baseball program during summer tournament, and wrestling will be using the facility as well.
Nicole English is head coach for the high school swim team.
Our swim team is able to host tournaments at their home facility, which is not something the surrounding area schools are able to do. For HS, we host approximately 6 meets a year - 1 being our big OHSAA sectional championship that has 15-20 teams at it every year. Other meets can host one to 4 teams at a time each. We usually have 12 meets on our schedule if you include our away meets!
We had 19 on the team last year, expecting more this year! One of our boys’ relay teams were state qualifiers last school year!
Other services:
Swim lessons.
The Ayersville swim lessons are highly sought after and classes usually fill up within a day. Preference is given to Ayersville students and residents for the lessons. This spring, 36 children completed swim lessons.
Amy Simonis, one of the pool supervisors, also offers one on one adult swim lessons.
Swim camp. 13 kids registered for swim camp over the summer.
Pool rental. The pool was rented out 21 times over the last year.
